Easy Meal: Turkey Meatballs

As you know, Cairn terriers tend to put on weight easily. Our CFO, Junka, is no exception!  Summer is around the corner. It’s time to shed that winter weight. Here is the super easy, low cal, high fiber & high protein meal I created for my lovely puppies:

Green beans is a great low calorie way to fill up their tiny tummies. They also are a good source of fiber, vitamins C & K, and manganese. Coconut oil helps improve digestion and nutrient absorption. It also helps promote normal thyroid function, which in this case good for chubby Junka. I don’t use any seasoning, sugar or salt in any of my cooking for my dogs. Sugar & salt can create health issues for them, and, more important, their bodies don’t need those.

Ingredients
1lb Organic Ground Turkey
½ C Fresh Green Beans – cut crosswise
¼ C Flaxseed Meal
2 Tbsp Coconut Oil
1 Egg

Preheat oven to 350F
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, green beans & flaxseed meal. Mix well. Stir in coconut oil & egg, so they coat all the meat & vegetables.
Shape mixture into 1-inch balls. Place in a single layer on 13” x 9” baking dish.
Bake for 20-30 mins.

“One Eye Brown.  And One Eye Blue.  I Have a Big Heart For You!”

Porkchop is a 4 year old, 55lb female English Bull dog. She LOVES people, toys & walk time. This adorable lady is also a fantastic listener, and 100% house broken. She will let you know with a little bark when she would like to go potty. Porkchop is very laidback and happy to go with the flow.

Chase is a Jack Russell Terrier/Basenji mix. He’s about 3-4 years old and weighs 14 lbs. This tough little guy is quite the clown. He's a real sweetie who loves to impress and wiggle his tail feather. He's great with both people and dogs and just wants to be part of the fun.

He joined Bill Foundation after he was attacked by another dog. Poor little guy!! He had a broken pelvis a diaphragmatic hernia. After an intensive surgery to repair his diaphragm, Chase is doing great. His pelvis has healed on its own and his overall long-term prognosis is excellent.
.
Please contact Bill foundations, if you would like to bring Chase home.

needs someone who can tell her “It’s forever this time."
This lovely 7 year old Border Collie is named Tannah. She has bounced around quite a bit, from a shelter in Salt Lake City, then rescued but passed from home to home. Finally, she landed at Best Friends Animal Society.

Tannah loves affection. She enjoys running, hiking, and playing fetch, so she will be a great companion for an active person. She may not be so fond of other dogs. But, on-leash, she is a perfect lady who can walk alongside another dog just fine.

For more information & how to adopt Tannah, please contact BestFriends Animal Society.

Doggie Language

Have you heard of Lili Chin? She is an amazing pet portrait artist and illustrator. “Doggie Language” is the title of one of her dog training illustrations. Besides being an illustrator, Lili Chin is also an remarkable fundraiser. She started The DOGGIE DRAWINGS project in 2008 to raise money for BostonBuddies, a non-profit Boston Terrier rescue organization in Southern California from which she adopted her blue-eyed Boston Terrier Boogie. In the beginning, she donated 100% of her proceeds from her dog portraits to rescue. Isn’t that incredible? So far she has raised almost $10,000 for BostonBuddies.

Someday, we hope that Yappy Bones will be able to raise that much money for animal rescue organizations….

Home for Lovely Pups: Things to consider before adopting a dog

·       Knowledge: such as dog breed, housebreaking, training, behavioral problems, and daily care of a dog. What kinds of dogs are best for you and your family?
·       Lifestyle: travel schedule, work hours, and social life. If one or more of these factors take up the majority of your time, ask yourself ‘are you willing to make changes to accommodate a dog in your life?’ If the answer is ‘no’, may be now is not the right time for you to adopt a dog.
·       Financial stability: having a dog comes with the price. The adoption fee, food, leash & carriers, toys, annual vet exams, vaccinations, monthly heartworm preventative, flea control, unexpected medical costs, pet insurance, grooming, training, dog sitting and boarding, all of which can cost roughly $1,000 - $3,000 a year, even for a healthy dog.
·       Time: Do you have enough time to provide and exercise a dog’s daily need? Love alone is not enough. Each dog needs a different amount of exercise, depending on breed & age. However, all dogs need at least half-hour walk every day.
Junka, Houby & I are out for at least a 20 minute-walk, 4 times daily. On a beautiful day we enjoy our extra-long morning walk around the park or an hour stroll around our neighborhood in the afternoon.
·       Commitment: Besides walking and exercising, a new dog needs love and other basic care such as obedience training, grooming, and veterinary care. A puppy will need more exercise, supervision and training than an adult dog. Sometimes rescue dogs or shelter dogs require a little more help to adjust to their new home. This could take a few days or it could take months. And, most important, committing to a dog means committing for their entire life.  Junka, like most Terriers, needed more time potty training than other breeds. Our first year together, I spent lot of time & energy setting up the house rules & training him. Needless to say, it’s all worth it. I wouldn’t trade him for anything in the world.

Good deeds: Bark in the Park

Bark in the Park is a 5k/3.2 mile run (for people) and walk (also for people, with or without dog) to raise funds and awareness for The Anti Cruelty Society, Chicago's oldest and largest, private open-admission human society. This year was their 19th annual event that kicked off last Saturday May 4th at Montrose Harbor beach. It is such a fantastic event that Yappy Bones proud to be part of it.

Last Saturday was a perfect day of camaraderie amongst us dog lovers, and our lovely pups. Thousands of dogs and their humans attended this year's event. We provided yummy healthy treats for those happy puppies after the fun run/walk. Dogs need little something, too, right?

Besides the 5K run/walk, there were so many activities for both people & dogs. Our CFO Junka had so much fun meeting new friends. Big or small he likes to know them all. He tried a dog obstacle course for the first time ever. That was fun & challenging for him. He also tried doggy physical training - tough! There were a pet massages, dog tattoos, a nail clipping spa, souvenir photo booth and more. Hope you can join us there next year!!

No more [Speed Eater]

As we all know how much our chubby CFO, Junka, loves food, so he is definitely a speedy eater. His love of food has grown stronger lately or.... maybe his inner woof kicked in. He tends to gulp his food instead of politely chewing it like good-mannered dogs do. All this rush just so he can run to me afterward for the traditional, after-meal Yappy Bones treats.

A dog who gobbles down food can develop health issues such as indigestion, vomiting, bloating, improper nutrient absorption or even death. So I have been looking for a special designed bowl that can slow down his eating by adding an obstacle. Here are some of the option I found....

Pssst... he may be upset that I tell you this. It was so funny watching him eating from his new bowl. He was frustrated & upset, even stepping back and growling and barking at the bowl. After couple meals, he finally made peace with his new bowl. He is now a slow[er] eater.

Good Pups: Bear The Manhattan DA's officer

Let’s meet the newest Manhattan district attorney's executive office employee, Bear!

Bear is the beautiful 4 year old chocolate Labrador retriever who has been employed as a therapy dog. Bear had an extensive training in Puppies Behind Bars program. The program trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for wounded war veterans, and also explosive detection canines for law enforcement.

Bear’s last patriotic assignment was as a service dog for a veteran. One of the commands Bear has been taught is 'Salute' - sitting up & raising his right paw to his head.

The District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. said Bear is going to work in the battle against domestic violence, elder abuse and child abuse. He will be work directly with those who need emotional comfort when they come to the Manhattan DA's office. One of the new commands he learned for his new duty is 'Tell me a story' which lets Bear know to come up and put his head on your lap.

Maddie on Things

Maddie The Coonhound: Maddie the Coonhound &emdash;

Maddie The Coonhound: Maddie the Coonhound &emdash;

Maddie The Coonhound: Maddie the Coonhound &emdash;

Photographer Theron Humphrey rescued a coonhound named Maddie. During a year long cross-country road trip together, Humphrey discovered Maddie's amazing balance and patience. He has posted quirky
photographs of Maddie gracefully & happily standing on pretty much anything and everything from shopping cart, to suitcases to a horse and people. She has become the four-legged Internet sensation. They just released an amazing book, Maddie on Things.

In the foreword of his book Humphrey wrote "Good things seem to start that way. You know, small." Committing to something and sticking to it is how we grow." He & Maddie give me hope that make the right choices to do things that make me happy. Life is too short to be miserable & unhappy. I love my two dogs, Houby & Junka, so very much. I love to do things that allow me to have them around me as much as possible. Making healthy wholesome yummy treats for them & my other furry friends is my passion. I’m hopeful that a year from now I’ll be able to look back at Yappy Bones and say the same thing - start small, commit & stick to it that is how we grow.....

Do you know Maddie, now, makes an appearance in her very own iPhone app? So now you can put Maddie on things too!

New Looks: [temporary] tattoo for dogs

On a quiet day at their shop 'Groomers on the Green,' groomers Jessica Allegri and Amanda Marshall came up with the idea for 'pooch patches' or 'temporary tattoos for dogs.'  The whole process -- which involves shaving & clipping the dogs' fur -- takes about an hour and lasts up to 14 weeks. I'm just curious.... Would you do this to your dog?
